Mural #32 ROUTE 66 - Celebrating the Centennial of Route 66!
California’s stretch of Route 66 winds through dramatic desert landscapes and vibrant communities - offering road trippers an authentic slice of Americana along one of the oldest and most well-known highways in the USA.
The area of Route 66 that stretches through the California Desert has a storied history. It began as a trail for ancient man and then for travelers looking for a better life (and riches). From there it became a wagon route and the auto route we think of it today.
The modern route 66 through Barstow officially began July 4, 1925 - when the town celebrated the new Main Street after it was moved from in front of the Harvey House.
Barstow has a lot to offer the Route 66 Traveler:Main St. Murals gallery; The famous Harvey House; Route 66 Museum; Western America Railroad Museum; the Mojave River Valley Museum and down town antique stores & coffee shops. You’ll find fun and adventure at every stop on the way from Needles, the “Gateway to California”, to the End of the Trail sign in Santa Monica.
