Main Street Murals is a non-profit 501 c(3) organization set up in the city of Barstow to create a walking gallery of historic murals along Route 66's Last Existing Main Street. Over the years our community outreach has expanded and we now offer a range of educational activities and community events from the Desert Discovery Center, located in the heart of Barstow.
We are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the historical, ecological and cultural heritage of the Mojave Desert, through the development of creative art, education and recreation opportunities that enrich the community and attract tourism.

The Main St Murals Youth Program is based at the Desert Discovery Center where we host workshops, presentation and public activities year round.

HOT OFF THE PRESS LATEST NEWS!
Main St Murals have just completed their 14th mural, "Silver Mining in the Mojave".
This project was completed as a Mural in a Day with participants from the Barstow Community and Main St Murals youth program and held at the Desert Discovery Center.
Master Muralist, Kathy Fierro led a team of enthusiastic artist who completed the job in 8hrs, just in time for a celebratory pot luck and awards ceremony on the garden patio which had over 40 people in attendance!

The mural is currently on display at the Desert Discovery Center, 831 Barstow Rd. Visit the center and view all the interesting exhibits and art installations we have and chill out in the native plant garden and pond area plus our popular tortoise habitat.

Tour kicks off with a presentation and slide show of the history of Barstow led by historian Steve Smith, followed by a unique wagon tour to view our historic murals. The tour meets 10am, at Barstow Flower & Bridal on the corner of 7th and Main St, spaces are limited and booking must be made in advance.

WALKING MURAL TOURS
In addition to our Horse and Wagon tour, we also host monthly walking mural tours which include a slide show entitled "150 years along Main Street" by Steve Smith of the Mojave River Valley Museum, followed by a walking mural tour of Barstow growing gallery of public art depicting history of the region from Stone Age to Space Age. The tour meets at Barstow Flower & Bridal located on the corner of 7th and Main Street and the program kicks off at 10am.

July & Aug & resume: Sep 25th, Oct 30th, Nov 27th.
The Walking Mural Tour is a great walk back in history through the presentation of Photographs, Stories and Large Mural Art - it’s fun, informative and FREE!
EDUCATION PROJECTS
Our 2010 Youth Program "Mining the Mojave " was a great success! This 5 month, hands on program was packed with fun classes, field trips and creative art activities and our team of Historians, Paleontologists, Geologists, Bureau of Land Management Rangers, National Parks Rangers, Naturalist, Writers and Artists led the group on a journey of discovery as they unearthed the science and history of Mining in the Mojave region.
As in past years we also filmed the project from start to finish and we will be compiling a short film of Main St Murals busy year for a screening in early Fall.
An exhibition of the students MINING project is on display at the Desert Discovery Center including, drawings, poetry, photography and the 20 foot Silver Mining Mural, so be sure to pop in and see the myriad of exhibits and enjoy the peaceful garden and turtle pool!

FALL 2010 AFTER SCHOOL PROJECT.
October marks the start of our After School Art & Craft Program entitled "PLANET EARTH". This class is held at the DESERT DISCOVERY CENTER and is FREE for students between the ages of 7 - 12.

The group were treated to guided tours of the outside excavation pits and also the museum and laboratory where the
group saw paleontologist working on the most recent finds at the sight.

The Desert Discovery Center (DDC) is comprised of a unique partnership between the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Barstow Unified School District,Barstow Community College, Mojave RiverValley Museum, City of Barstow, Discovery Trails, Main St Murals and Off Limits Design Inc. The mission of the DDC is to develop and implement a comprehensive formal and informal education center with programs focusing on the natural, cultural, and historic resources associated with the Mojave Desert.
